He is stubbornly protective of Earth and its peoples. His past is unknown. While he appears human, it's clear that he's more than just that. His human appearance is likely a preference, and has been so long enough to become his default. Raiden is never shown to change from appearing human to another mortal species, but he can take the form of lightning. Raiden has a longtime alliance with the Temple of Light and the monks there worship him as their patron god. They are similar to the Shaolin monks, and raised the first, Great Kung Lao who saves Earthrealm from destruction at the hands of Shao Kahn and his Outworld armies. Raiden appears to be the only god of Earthrealm who actually interacts with mortals, as we never see or hear of any other local realm gods. He has been protecting Earth from Shao Kahn's armies of Outworld for thousands of years. He has been fighting against Quan Chi and his dark forces of the Netherrealm for even longer. PERSONALITY Compared to many of his alternate portrayals, this incarnation of Raiden is far more personable and warm. This may be due to the fact this this canon predates even the first Mortal Kombat video game canon. As it is, Raiden is more mischievous, and plants the seeds of events, letting the mortals work out the details and final outcome. He directly reports to the Elder gods, who oversee all five realms in the series, and is strictly limited by their rules. These rules are rarely described in detail, but a few details are known. He cannot interfere in the affairs of mortals. He may only be a guide when asked, but is not permitted to tell them what is the best course of action. If a mortal breaks one of the nebulous rules set down by the Elder gods (I.E. An Outworlder attacks the champion of Earthrealm outside of the competition), then Raiden is finally allowed to step in. If an otherworldly power (corruption from Netherrealm) is at work, he may also interfere. However, Raiden is still a god and can show his more merciless side when pushed. When his favorite, Kung Lao, puts all of Earthrealm at risk for the sake of saving two mortal friends, Raiden steps in after the fight concludes. He scolds Kung Lao for being selfish, not thinking of the safety of the entire realm, and says that he'd been tempted to finish off Kung Lao's dying friends to prevent Kung Lao from waving the rules of Kombat and putting the realm at stake. Raiden also has a longstanding animosity with the denizens of Netherrealm, and it's not uncommon for him to outright threaten them with complete destruction. He has little tolerance for corrupted souls or their master, Quan Chi. While in a dream state, Kung Lao imagined Raiden drinking and having sexual relations with a mortal female. Up until this point Raiden has shown no particular interest or inclination in sex. As this was a dream being had by a heterosexual male and likely included personal projection onto Raiden's behavior, Raiden will be played out as asexual in nature.
